Fergal Fox hangs up his boots

The club would like to wish Fergal Fox well in his retirement from football.

Since joining us about a decade ago, the Bonniconlon, Co. Mayo native has been one of our most active members, both in a playing capacity and as an underage coach. He won JFC medals in 2012 and 2018 and was always a handful for opposing full backs with his physical strength and direct style of play. In last year's successful championship campaign, he came off the bench to score two late goals against Ballynacargy in the first round and also raised a green flag against Castletown-Finea/Coole/Whitehall in the next round.

While Fergal usually played at full forward, he famously lined out at full back when we beat Ballynacargy in the first round of the 2013 IFC at Lakepoint Park. He was one of those players who was happy to play wherever he was asked to. He was a selfless player who the youngsters looked up to and is the epitome of a good clubman.

Having put down strong roots in Kilbeggan, we have no doubt that Fergal will continue to drive our underage set-up in the coming years and will have a key role to play in our future, whether it be in a management or administrative capacity. 

Scor na nOg quiz

Well done to Lisa Ennis, Stephanie Scally, Mark Wrafter and Aideen Tehan who gave an excellent account of themselves in the Scor na nOg Tráth na gCeist / Quiz in Streamstown last Friday night. We thank Anne-Marie Scally for her work with the team over the past few months and wish our neighbours Ballinagore the very best in the All-Ireland final in Castlebar next month.

We are currently looking for participants in Scor Sinsear which commences shortly. There are seven different disciplines, including Solo Singing, Ballad Group, Recitation, Set Dancing and Tráth na gCeist.

The dates for the Westmeath Scor Sinsear semi-finals are Friday, February 8 and Saturday, February 9. Scor Tráth na gCeist takes place on Friday, February 22 (we entered two teams of four in this category last year), while the county final is scheduled for Saturday, February 23.

Last Man Standing 2019

It's that time of the year again, less than two weeks to go to our now annual GAA Last Man Standing competition, which is run by Mel Kiernan. Who will take over as champion from Aaron McNamee and walk away with the €400 prize money?

To enter, you just have to pay €10 to any club player or member and provide an email address as this will be your means of making your selection each week and receiving instructions and confirmation of your selections. All money raised will go towards the development of the club.

Last week's lucky numbers were 5, 20, 26 and 27. Nicky Finn and Mary Lynagh were the Match 3 winners. This week's draw takes place in Paddy Ryan's with the jackpot standing at €15,000. Tickets, costing €2, can be purchased locally. Thank you for your continued support.

O'Byrne Cup final

Best of luck to the Westmeath senior footballers in next Friday night's O'Byrne Cup final against Dublin at Parnell Park. With Dublin expected to field a weakened side, this is a great opportunity for Westmeath to put some early season silverware on the sideboard.
