John O’Mahony is set to take charge of a Westmeath club in the coming year.

The former Galway, Mayo and Leitrim manager is expected to be confirmed as the new manager of The Downs in the coming days. The Downs is located just off the M4 Motorway near Mullingar which makes it convenient for the Mayo-based Senator who travels to the Dail in Dublin every week.

O’Mahony famously led Galway to All-Ireland SFC titles in 1998 and 2001, having guided Leitrim to their first Connacht SFC success in 67 years in 1994. He also had two stints in charge of his native Mayo, leading them to an All-Ireland final appearance in the first of those against Cork in 1989.

One of the traditional powers of Westmeath football, The Downs are brimming with potential after winning numerous underage titles in recent years and are hoping to translate that into senior success under O’Mahony who will succeed Steven Cleary in the hotseat.
