Kilbeggan Shamrocks GAA Notes

December 16, 2018

AGM

There was a good-sized attendance at our AGM which took place in Scoil an Chlochair on Sunday night, December 16.

Members took the opportunity to reflect on a very successful year while also looking ahead to 2019. In his address, Ken Scally – who is entering his 10th (and final!) year as chairman – noted how the undoubted highlight of 2018 was winning the junior championship for a seventh time. He thanked the Keith Higgins-led management for all their work with the team and looked forward to the prospect of Kilbeggan consolidating their position and maybe even challenging for a place in the knockout stages of the intermediate championship next year.

Ken also thanked his fellow committee members, Noel Collins and the seven lotto teams, Nicky Finn for overseeing the running of our all-weather facility as well as our sponsors, including main sponsor Ronan McCarthy of the M6 Service Station. He took great encouragement from the nursery programme and Scor, which were new developments this year. Additionally, he expressed his gratitude to the Kilbeggan supporters for getting behind the junior team in such large numbers this year.

Marie Lynagh presented a superb secretary's report as well as a complete rundown of the adult results during the year.

“I think one of the best moments of my life to date was watching the droves of supporters in The Square gleaming with pride when the homecoming celebrations kicked off. I have never been prouder to be a Kilbeggan secretary, supporter and, most of all, a Kilbeggan woman. Roll on 2019!” Marie enthused.

Detailed reports on ladies football, underage activities and Scor were read out by Bernie Barrett, Fergal Fox and James Claffey respectively.

Treasurer Martina Rochford's report showed the club to be in a healthy state financially with the weekly lotto, the Astroturf facility, September’s Ploughing Championships fundraiser and Mel Kiernan’s ‘Last Man Standing Competition’ providing the main revenue streams in 2018.

The hand booklet distributed on the night also included a Club Review and Action Plan for the next three years.

The outgoing executive was returned en bloc with Bernie Barrett and Brendan McDonnell being voted on to the committee.

A proposal by Padraig Egan to enter our second team in the junior ‘A’ championship next year received strong support. Padraig argued that it would provide players with competitive games in the summer months, rather than waiting until November to play in the junior ‘B’ championship, which is straight knockout.

The 2019 executive committee is - chairman: Ken Scally; vice-chairman: Paul Daly; secretary: Marie Lynagh; treasurer: Martina Rochford; joint treasurers: Keith Gorry and Mel Kiernan; PRO: Randal Scally; county board delegates: Philip Kiernan and Ger Carton; health & wellbeing officer: Brendan Nannery; child protection officer: Pat Lynagh; Scor coordinator: Fiona Fennell. Other committee members (more to be added): Alan Fennell, Colin Draper, Larry Claffey, Nicky Finn, Noel Collins, Mickey Kelly, James Claffey, Tom Ward, Fergal Fox, Bernie Barrett and Brendan McDonnell.

St Stephen’s Day fun run

This year’s marks the 10th anniversary of Dermot Smith’s annual St Stephen’s Day 6k fun run / walk in aid of Crumlin’s Children’s Hospital, starting at 12 noon from The Square. The event has become one of the highlights of the festive season in Kilbeggan and all support from the GAA community would be great appreciated.
