The Downs Ladies Club
Minor Ladies Division 1 Final
The Downs 3-13 Milltown 3-12
Where do you begin when it’s a 43 point thriller! - the fact that the Downs created a little bit of history for themselves and their Club by winning a Minor Championship is a good start. This squad had several girls making the step up from U16 and they were duly supported by team mates who had played in this year’s Senior Championship.
Anyone who attended this game considered it a ‘thriller’ and clearly from the throw in it was high octane end to end play – a fantastic advertisement for Ladies Football. The Downs Minor squad can be so proud to win their Ladies Club first Minor Championship at any grade and even more special when that initial breakthrough is a Division 1 title.
Our full back line of Jane Holton, Aine McManus, Caoimhe Monaghan & Katie Moore worked so hard to keep a rampant Milltown forward line in check and on several occasions helped by our impressive young goalkeeper Grace Sullivan. The half back line of Roisin Murray & Ciara Wynne was led out by Lucy Power working tirelessly and contributing scores. Several the Downs scores originated from turnover ball from the half backs supported by a midfield engine of Megan Dowdall, Sheila McGrath and Meadbh Scally who covered huge ground and produced a solid attacking platform. The Downs forwards of Britney McNamee, Ciara Faulkner, Olivia Glynn, Katie Daly, Gemma Faulkner & Francesca Walshe only needed a sniff of an opportunity to notch up a score.
The management team knew that our girls did not lack heart and when your team is 7 points down and only 10 minutes remaining you need to stand up and be counted and every member of our squad showed immense character and stamina to get over the winning line. The squad on the day all played their part in getting this team to a final and their dedication is much appreciated – Grace Sullivan, Aine McManus, Jane Holton, Caoimhe Monaghan, Katie Moore, Ciara Wynne, Lucy Power (Capt.), Roisin Murray, Megan Dowdall, Meadbh Scally, Sheila McGrath, Katie Daly, Ciara Faulkner, Oliva Glynn, Britney McNamee, Francesca Walshe, Gemma Faulkner, Aoife Mullen, Lauren Guilfoyle, Rosaleen Daly, Kayleigh Reidy.
Thanks to all the parents that drove to training nights and matches as without your contribution these teams would not function.
Special thanks to the entire management team of Trudy Rowan, Fiona Faulkner, Jack Mullen, Paddy Monaghan and Dermot Power – we finally secured that elusive Minor Title!
