Well Attended AGM

Thanks to all who attended the Annual General Meeting held in the Gaelscoil last Friday night. The meeting heard an impressive and detailed report from club secretary Martin Geary regaling attendees of all the activities and achievements of the club throughout the year from St. Patrick’s Day to AIT end-of-year outings. Reports for each age group were also read by the various mentors at these levels and the overall message is to be that the club is thriving and growing with prospects for the future very positive. At the end of the meeting outgoing officers were thanked for their time and efforts over the past three years in bringing the club to such a pivotal point in its development and the election of new officers took place. The key roles of Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer were filled by Martin Geary, Frank Lee and Dermot Whelan respectively and all in attendance wished them well in their endeavours in bringing the club to the next level.

Christmas Catch Challenge

The Christmas Catch Challenge is up and running with a number of contenders already surfacing at each age level. The challenge is to record the maximum number of catches and strikes that can be made in one minute with the hurler standing at least 2 metres from the striking surface. Each age level is invited to send their videos to their lead mentors asap with some nice prizes up for grabs just in time for Christmas. Check out the Facebook page for details.

Stay Healthy Stay Hurling

Another great U12/U10 session at the RSC AstroTurf pitch last Sunday under the guidance of Pat O’Neill and Jason Bradley as the Reds and Greens went hell for leather for the hour with the Greens holding out to win 7-6 despite a strong comeback from the Reds at the end of a thrilling clash. Numbers were great again despite the elements going against us and this session is recognised as a key factor in driving on the standard of hurling in the club as players get to sharpen their skills over the winter season.

Tuesday Marist Sessions

Equally useful and crucial to developing our hurlers into heroes are the Tuesday Marist Sessions where the healthy numbers ensure a noisy but busy session for our U6s and U8s. Numbers are growing each week showing the rising popularity of hurling in Athlone. If you have a hurler-in-waiting drop in to Tony or Frank ASAP on Tuesday and get them pucking. HIIT Sessions in Gaelscoil

The U14s are set to be the fittest bunch at the Christmas teen discos with their High Intensity sessions each Sunday in the Gaelscoil Hall. The next three weeks will see the intensity intensify, if at all possible! It is planned to finish the schedule out with Pure Cardio, Body Balance with Guest Instructor and Power and Resistance. This should set the squad up for an early start in the new season as this age level are always first out of the blocks with Féile looming fast in Spring. Well done to Martin Geary for co-ordinating this novel option to build up strength and stamina for next year’s challenges.

UNESCO Recognition for Hurling

While it is great news that UNESCO have recognised the importance of hurling as a cultural treasure, it is something we here in Southern Gaels have known for years and it is with great pride we carry the torch for this incredible game in Athlone and district. It seems appropriate to take this opportunity to thank all our players, mentors and players past and present for helping to keep hurling alive and pucking over the years thus ensuring that it has a bright future here in Westmeath. Gaels and Hurling Abú!
