ACFL Division 6B

Athlone 3-9 St Mary’s, Rochfortbridge 1-8

Division 6B of the ACFL resumed after a long hiatus when we hosted St Mary’s of Rochfortbridge in this Round 5 game played in ideal conditions in Páirc Chiaráin on Sunday morning.  Athlone used this game as a warm-up ahead of the upcoming Under 20 Championship Semi-Final against The Downs and fielded a predominantly Under 20 team in what proved to be a very useful exercise against a competitive Rochfortbridge side.

The home side started sluggishly and trailed by 0-2 to 0-1 after 10 minutes, but when Richie Greene got in behind the defence to blast home the game’s opening goal, they took a lead that they wouldn’t relinquish.  A second goal followed soon after when Josh Beaumont tapped home from close range after the goalkeeper had dropped a high ball and Greene stretched the lead with his second point of the game.  Rochfortbridge brought themselves back into the match will a well-worked team goal and a pointed free, but Athlone finished the half strongly with two more Greene points either side of a Kieran Colclough effort to leave the half-time score 2-5 to 1-3 in the hosts’ favour.

The irrepressible Greene started the second period as he had ended the first with two more fine points to stretch the lead to seven, but Athlone then became sloppy in attack and it took until the 50th minute for them to add to their total, although it was worth waiting for when a flowing move from their own kickout led to a superb Kieran Colclough goal.  Rochfortbridge continued to battle hard and added four points in the final 10 minutes, but late points from Sean Dowd and Colin O’Leary kept daylight between the sides and at the final whistle there were seven points between them, 3-9 to 1-8 in Athlone’s favour.

Next up for Athlone in this competition is a playoff away to neighbours Garrycastle at 11.30am next Sunday morning, November 18th, with a place in the final against Tang awaiting the winners.
