Southern Gaels club notes

November 12, 2018

End of Season AIT Extravaganza
As is customary now in the club, each age group finishes off their Pitch season with a bang and this year the bang was louder than ever! All the age groups from U6 to U12 had the chance to descend on the AIT Athletics Arena to be coached, trained and tested at five different Athletics Disciplines. Some super AIT coaches were on hand to inspire the young hurlers how to excel at the challenge and exceed their expectations. There was great encouragement and cheering all through the sessions and with the look of joy on so many kids faces, they were without doubt having a great time. Even some of the mentors got in on the act to race the 200 metre track to rapturous applause from the kids as a photo finish was required to separate the old fogies. All were fed and watered in the canteen with a SMACS delivery to send every child home full and tired. Our Club secretary especially thanked all parents for their dedication to bringing the young hurlers to so many training sessions, as they appreciate, they can only get better by listening to the valuable coaching they get in the club.

U14/U16 Fitness Sessions
In the Off season, kids can miss their preferred sport, so in an effort to keep them all training and bonding together, the U14s and U16s have indulged on pre-Christmas winter training programme with some HIIT sessions. These are High Intensity Interval Training Sessions and are not for the faint hearted, as they’re a very tough workout, but the players have again risen to the challenge and are enjoying the comradery and friendship in digging deep to survive the sessions. However they know, they’re increasing their agility and aerobic fitness, so they’re all leaving with big smiles, knowing they’ll be in better shape for 2019. The sessions take place in the Gaelscoil hall every Sunday for the next few weeks from 5pm to 6pm.

Off Grass Sessions for U6s/8s/10s/12s
The hurling never stops. To maintain a high level of skill in any sport requires commitment and dedication. Such is the growing hunger for the sport, the young hurlers want to keep the hand-eye co-ordination in as the grass season ends. The U6 Academy and the U8s have moved indoor to the Marist Hall for some indoor Hurling and they train 6.30 to 7.30 giving it socks for the hour. Along with their usual dedicated coaches, some Marist TY students have lent their support and are assisting coaching as part of their TY Curriculum. Many thanks to Tomak Idowski and Cian McCarthy who the pioneers of this assistance for 2018. If any other TY students are interested please let us know on 0872253350. Meanwhile the U10s and U12s are re planning their Stay Healthy Stay Hurling programme on the Athlone Regional Sports Centre Astro. They have proven extremely popular in recent years, so they will give them a lash for the next few weeks again in the pre-Christmas run-in: 5pm to 6pm in ARSC – New Hurlers always welcome.

AGM on 30 November
For your diary, the club AGM will take place on Friday 30th November. It is very important that all members make an effort to come along and contribute to the running of our club. We’re looking for new and innovative ways to keep hurling alive and pucking in South Westmeath and your opinion is valuable – please come and share it.
