Minor Champions

The Downs are once again minor champions following a 1-15 to 0-12 win over Maryland/Tang in Ballynacargy last Saturday evening. The lads played against a stiff breeze in the opening half and found the condition difficult as we trailed 0-11 to 0-5. Maryland/Tang extended their lead to seven just after the restart but this would be their last score as The Downs defence really stepped up, preventing some certain goal chances for our opponents. Our forwards then began to see more of the ball to start chipping away at the Maryland/Tang lead and with ten minutes to go took the lead and never looked back as we raced into a six point lead. This team have gone the entire year unbeaten which a magnificent achievement, given some of the talented teams we faced throughout the year. Well done to the management team of Barry, Eunan, O ‘Neill and Tommy for their efforts all year.

U16

Hard luck to the U16 lads who lost out to Kilucan last Sunday morning, in the division one championship semi-final. The lads held a slender one point lead at the interval 0-08 to 1-04. Unfortunately Kilucan managed to convert three second half goals to take victory. Full time 4-10 to 1-12. Thanks to Danny, Kenny, Damien and the two Darragh’s and all the players for their efforts throughout the year.

The Downs Ladies

Senior Championship

This year’s senior championship run came to an end last Saturday when our ladies went down fighting to a strong Milltown team on a score line of 4-15 to 2-13. This was a really good game of football and showed off the many great qualities of the ladies game. From the throw in the match was played at a high tempo with no quarter sought or given by either team and with high levels of skill displayed by both sides. The difference of 8 points does not give our girls justice and with a small amount of luck we could have bagged a few goals. Losing a semi-final is never easy especially when you have trained hard over the previous months but you need to take the positives from these matches. Really well done to the entire squad on the day Sarah Maguire, Aoife Mullen, Aisling Egerton, Emma Murtagh, Leanne Duncan, Gillian Ferguson, Niamh Rowan, Niamh Nolan, Megan Dowdall, Sheila McGrath, Ciara Faulkner, Olivia Glynn, Lucy Power, Britney McNamee, Ellen Taite, Ciara Wynne, Roisin Murray, Meadbh Scally, Leon Briek, Caoimhe Monaghan, Katie Moore, Jane Holton. This was our first year playing senior football and whilst we struggled initially during the league campaign to find our feet with competing sports and other team commitments the basis of a strong squad was always evident. The Championship could not come soon enough for as we sought to finally show what we could do and winning Div 1 Group 2 to gain promotion to Div 1 Group 1 was a great achievement and proves that we deserved to be contesting at this level. We are a young talented team with a great attitude and the future looks bright for these ladies. The football year is not over yet and the Division 1 Minor Championship will kick off in the coming weeks.
