Athlone manager Emmett McDonnell is looking forward to the senior football championship finally getting underway.

Following a long wait, the Westmeath SFC begins this weekend as Athlone take on Coralstown/Kinnegad at TEG Cusack Park on Saturday evening.

The south Westmeath side are one of the outsiders for the title, but McDonnell states to the Westmeath Independent that preparations for the championship have gone well in the last few weeks.

"We had a reasonable league campaign but all our focus is firmly on the championship now. The lads have been working hard in training and we are really looking forward to our opening encounter against Coralstown/Kinnegad," said McDonnell.

"Over the last couple of months a few of our players were away with Buccaneers and with other teams including Willow Park, but most of them have returned now. It's only in the last couple of weeks we have been able to set the whole squad back together to our preparations were not ideal."
