All County Football League Division 1

Garrycastle 0-13 Mullingar Shamrocks 0-6

The division 1 team picked up their second pair of points on Friday night last when they defeated Mullingar Shamrocks by 7 points in Garrycastle. On a pitch which was soft but held up well, the home team dominated most of the game except a patch midway in the first half when they conceded 4 points on the trot. Two quick early points by Sean Brennan and Paul Mulvihill, were followed by a fallow period during which possession won wasn't being converted into scores. Ten minutes later Dessie Dolan added a point from play. Over a three minute period from the 16th minute Shamrocks went from 3 down to level and on the 21st minute they took the lead. With Eoin Monaghan and Doran Harte regaining the upper hand at midfield and Dessie Dolan pulling the strings, Garrycastle began to dominate again. James Sheeran kicked a point and Dessie Dolan pointed after taking a pass from Doran Harte. Two very slick points from play and one from a free by Cathal Mannion were replied to by a single point from Shamrocks leaving Garrycastle ahead by 0-7 to 0-5 at halftime.

The second half continued with Garrycastle on top and a long distance point by Dessie Dolan. Shamrocks replied with a point after 6 minutes which was to be their last score. Two more Dessie Dolan frees, after fouls on substitute Jason Nugent, increased the lead to 4. Then Alex Gardiner kicked a good point from play. A good run up the wing by Michael Monaghan, resulted in a point by the same player. Shamrocks were being starved of possession at this stage and the occasional foray up the field resulted in wides. The last point was another from play by the superb Dessie Dolan. This was a good workman like performance by a Garrycastle team short many regulars.

All County Football League Division 3

Garrycastle 0-12 Kilucan 1-7

The first division 3 game of the year saw Garrycastle get 2 league points on the board. This game was played in Garrycastle after the pitch in Kilucan wqs declared unplayable due to snow. Playing with a strong wind Garrycastle got off to a good start with five points, through Cathal Mannion (2), Paul ODonovan, (2) and Sean Carey, (1) before Kilucan got on the board which was after 15 minutes. In the sond quarter Damien Rushe, Eoin Monaghan and Sean Brennan added three more points for the home team to 2 for the visitors leaving the halftime score 0-8 to 0-3. Early in the second half Garrycastle went up the field and quickly got a point from a free close to the goal by Cathal Mannion . A Garrycastle kickout was intercepted resulting in a Kilucan goal. However Garrycastle continued to dominate and were rewarded with two points from Cathal Mannion (free) and Damien Rushe. With the score at 0-11 to 1-3 it looked good for the home team. However Kilucan continued to battle and got 3 unanswered points to reduce the lead to two with less than 10 minutes left. Another Damien Rushe, point gave Garrycastle some breathing space and despite late Kilucan pressure they could only add one more point to their tally leaving the final score at 0-12 to 1-7. The heavy pitch was taking its toll on the players with some showing signs of cramp. It was a decent performance by the Garrycastle lads. Goalkeeper in the first half newcomer Shane Moran showed that he is well capable of playing in the forwards in the second.

Team: Shane Moran, Gary Mullery Anthony Larkin Ben Kennedy, Sean Carey, Sean Brennan, Enda Keena, Damien Rushe, Eoin Monaghan, Conor Duignan, Brian McCormack, Paul Gunning, Paul Mulvihill, Cathal Mannion, Paul ODonovan. Subs Michael Fagan for Paul Mulvihill, Mark Denby for Paul ODonovan, Paul ODonovan for Sean Brennan(injured); Killian Lyons for Conor Duignan.
