Westmeath hurling manager Michael Ryan says he was delighted with the response his players showed in the second-half of Saturday's Walsh Cup defeat to Offaly.

The Lake County conceded an unanswered 1-4 in the closing five minutes of the first-half in Banagher but battled back after half-time to cut the gap to a point before eventually losing out on a final score of 2-15 to 1-16.

"We had a bad five minutes before half-time when we conceded a goal and three points. That gave us a mountain to climb but I was delighted with the response by our fellas after half-time," Ryan is quoted saying by the Irish Independent.

"We are delighted with what we got today. We got a good performance, we worked hard and never died. We fought into the game when it looked to be slipping away from us and played some nice hurling along the way.

"Our first league game is against Carlow down in Carlow and that will be a test for us. Carlow are a good side and a good physical side like Offaly so today was good preparation."
