Under 21 Final

Our Under 21 Team took on Clan Na Gael in TEG Cusack Park on the 11th of November at 2.30pm.

The day was wet, cold and conditions were poor for all concerned, however many supporters showed up in the green and gold to support this team despite the weather.

Clonkill's  start was magic with 3 points from the Magician himself Niall Mitchell.

From the outset Clonkill appeared to be in the driving seat, however with the opposition having players with great calibre such as Warren Casserly, John McCarthy and Conor Shaw we could not afford to let the foot of the pedal.

As with previous matches attended, I could only describe the performance as a tremendous team effort.

Dylan Carroll, wore the number 1 Jersey and as with all his performances throughout the year have been flawless and the final was no different, his ability to read the game and is sharpness off the line has been second to none all year.

Mickey McGrath, Peadar Scally and Eoghan O'Keefe played in the full back line and gave a sterling performance.  Peadar has commanded this position at full back this year and with the two very strong and capable corner backs beside him, they work well as a Unit.

John Kenny, Darragh Egerton and Ciaran Nolan, were in the half back line for the final and played an attacking role.  In particular John Kenny excelled winning many balls that fell to him and drove forward with them.

Jack O'Brien and Peter Murray were like the Dynamic Duo at Midfield, working harmoniously together and displayed some fine passages of play throughout the game.

Our half forward line was made up of our giants in Clonkill, Adam Loughlin, Danny Lennon and Steven Colgan.  With all these lads over 6ft they were immediately an aerial threat to the opposition.   Adam Loughlin  on many occasions throughout the game sprung to catch a high ball, rounded his man and gave many perfect passes which resulted in a score for us.

Joseph Moran, Niall Mitchell and Conor Coughlan were the full forward line and all appeared on the score board very quickly.

Clonkill Management introduced Jordan Smyth and like his team mate Joseph Moran has a natural ability to score goals.  Jordan had a fine point scored within 2 minutes of introduction and shortly to follow would be fine goal from him.

Daire McLaughlin was also introduced and proved his worth on the team with his work rate and constant battling to win the dirty ball and give it to the man in the better position. Daire is a fantastic team player and will do anything it takes to win.

Oisin Dowdall and Steven Sheridan were also introduced in the second half and  proved their worth to this team.

Rest of Panel Ryan Moran, Conor Dunican & Sean Loughlin.

Mr Billy Foley gave a short speech, complementing both teams on their efforts on the day before handing over the cup to Mr Pat Slevin who was delighted to present the cup to Niall Mitchell.

Niall gave a lovely speech on the day, thanking all the supporters who came out to support them on the cold and wet day.

He also thanked O'Reilly Fitzsimons for the tops which they sponsored.

As the Hurling Calendar in Clonkill draws to a close   for 2017 we can reflect on the year as a successful one.

Finals are hard reached and harder to win.

The Under 21 Championship, runs off fairly quickly with not to many games to be played, however this year the standard of these games was very high.  Again it's very easy to see the positive side of things when you are on the winning side, but as  a Spectator this year, Clonkill Under 21's gave some fine displays, grafting out wins with pure team work and determination.

Well done to the Management of this Team Fergal Fagan, Paul Kellaghan, Pat O'Toole and David O'Reilly for having these lads prepared so well.

Oran Dunne

It was great to see young Oran Dunne at the Under 21 Matches.   Oran is one of Clonkill greatest supporters and we hope he is doing well.
