O'Sullivan, Sonny

January 12, 2007
The late Sonny O'Sullivan Sonny was born and reared within a GAA environment and within a family that was to make an indelible mark on the Association in our county. He would have been ninety three in a few months time had not the Grim Reaper called him ashore, and he lived all of those nine decades plus to the full. The Portlaw club was his heart and soul, and it was 1961 (I think) that he won a county junior hurling championship medal at the age of forty eight when Portlaw defeated a Cappoquin opposition that included another legend, Paddy English, who played at midfield while in his 50s. The real significance of that victory however for the O'Sullivan family was that Sonny's son Noel played in goal on the team. He gave numerous years to refereeing the games also, and in a multiplicity of other ways served the club and the Association exemplarily. He was in every sense a pure gentleman, a man I'm proud and privileged to have known and befriended, and a man I'll retain the fondest memories of for as long as I'm around. To the entire O'Sullivan family the column extends its heartfelt sympathy. Go ndeine Dia trocaire ar a anam dilis. Courtesy of the Waterford News and Star 12 January 2007
