Foley, Joe

November 18, 2005
Late Joe Foley It is with sorrow and regret we record the death of Joe Foley, 10, St. Patricks' Crescent, Dungarvan. Born on 17th March 1926, Joe worked at many jobs as a young man, before joining the staff of Power's Brewery where he remained for many years as a driver. Joe was well known to all the publicans in the local area, as he was on the "town run" for many years. He also spent a good many years in the F.C.A. and the highlight for him and his friend, Tommy Sheehan, was the annual training camp in Summer. Joe was an outstanding hurling goalkeeper, starring for Eire Og when they won the county hurling championship title in 1951. He also played for Dungarvan and was honoured by the county selectors and remained a loyal follower of Waterford teams down through the years. Joe's other form of relaxation was dancing and he and Monica were renowned as accomplished dancers. Indeed, with their many friends, they practiced in the kitchen of their home in St. Patrick's Crescent. After the untimely death of Monica, Joe turned to painting and decorating so he could devote more time to the children. Like all other jobs, he performed this task in a cheerful manner, whistling his way through the day. His most important piece of equipment for work was his battered paint-splattered old transistor. On his retirement at the age of 72, Joe filled his time with walking and indulging his love of nature and wildlife, a passion shared by his good friend, the late Dabo Flynn, and he was often accompanied on his walks by his life-long friend, Tommy Sheehan. All through his lifetime, Joe was a kind and courageous man, whose door was always open to his children, no matter what. His sense of humour and quick wit were some of his many great qualities and, indeed, were the ones that brought him through the many challenges that were presented to him on his journey. While listening to him, you would come away knowing that Joe savoured every moment of his adventures in life. And now as his spirit passes to the next phase of his journey, we are comforted in knowing that, once again, he is reunited with his best friend and wife, Monica, whom he loved dearly all his life, his son John and grandson, Vincent. A man of simple pleasures and infectious good humour, Joe was truly one of nature's gentle souls. He will be greatly missed and mourned by his sons Joseph, Liam and Kiernan; daughters Maura, Triona, Esther and Denise; grandchildren, sons and daughters-in-law, nieces, nephews, relatives and many kind friends and neighbours.
