Dan Shanahan has claimed that his younger brother Maurice was jeered by members of the Clare bench as he prepared to convert the last-gasp free which sent the Allianz Hurling League final to a replay.

Clare manager Davy Fitzgerald was one of the first to congratulate the Deise's saviour after the final whistle, but what allegedly happened before left a sour taste in Waterford selector Dan's mouth.

"I think Maurice deserves respect. It took a lot of liathroidi to put the ball over the bar," he said.

"He got a lot of heckling, to be honest. I'm talking from the Clare bench. From the crowd (as well) and stuff like that. That's just the way it is, I suppose."

The former Hurler of the Year played down the first half melee which was sparked by Austin Gleeson's challenge on Tony Kelly along the sideline.

"Ah look, that's only handbags stuff. These things happen. You've two benches and they're going to back up (their team)."
