Waterford footballers have been dealt a blow after it was revealed that experienced defender Tony Grey has been ruled out of action for the remainder of the year.

Grey suffered cruciate knee ligament damage before the Decies last league game against Carlow and a scan revealed the full extent of the injury.

The Stradbally clubman is undergoing surgery this week and he admits that injury occurred following an innocuous challenge.

"I was in with Dr Tadgh O'Sullivan in Whitfield last week, so unfortunately I'm after damaging my cruciate ligament," Grey told the Waterford News & Star.

Explaining how the injury occurred, he added: "We were just in training and two guys going for a ball the same as happens a hundred times in training. I got caught the wrong way under a guy and he fell on top of me. I knew I was in trouble straight away. It was fairly painful for five minutes."
