Lyons expected stern test

Last years All Ireland MHC winnners, Waterford, have got over the first hurdle in this years Munster championship by beating Clare. INPHO
Waterford manager Derek Lyons insists the stern test his side received from Clare in last night's Munster MHC opener didn't surprise him.

The reigning All-Ireland champions were staring at defeat until they reeled off an unanswered 1-5 in the closing seven finals to win 1-13 to 0-11.

"We didn't expect anything less from Clare," Lyons told the Irish Examiner.

"We had seen them in some of their challenge games and they play a fast-paced game, similar to what their senior team is playing. They gave it their all, we just got a turn on them at a crucial time."

The Deise boss refused to rule out the possibility of meeting the Banner again later in the championship.

"Clare are not out of this yet," he stressed.

"We could even meet them again in the semi-final and I wouldn't be one bit surprised if we did - they're a lovely team to watch. We made it hard on ourselves at times tonight but that was down to the quality of players they have, the quality of the hurling they played."
