Rheinisch, Julian

The Late Julian Rheinisch

A Dungarvan and indeed a Waterford GAA Legend, the great Julian Rheinisch, passed away last week in his adopted Dublin at the age of ninety seven.

Club and county has never had a more loyal, a more stalwart, and a more dedicated and committed supporter than Dungarvan born Julian. Although domiciled in Dublin for most of his adult life, he remained what he always was - the ultra Waterfordian who would literally die for the Deise cause.

They came on finer and no more honourable than Julian Rheinisch, and for this columnist it was an immense pleasure and privilege to have known him and to have befriended him for as long as I did.

He was the last surviving member of the Dungarvan minor hurling team that won the 1931 county championship, and of course, he represented the club proudly in all the grades throughout his distinguished career. He was a very proud man too when one of his own sons, Eamonn, donned the sky blue of Dublin, at senior championship level.

Last Monday, Julian's remains were brought home to the Old Boro for burial alongside his wife, Mai, in St. Mary's Parish Church. The Coffin was draped in the blue and white of club and county, and fittingly Dungarvan club members provided a guard of honour. No doubt, Julian would have appreciated that- the club and membership he adored paying him that deserved final tribute.

To the entire Rheinisch family our deepest sympathy is extended. Julian may be gone from this life but among the people of Dungarvan and Waterford as a whole he will never be forgotten.
