Late Maureen Fives

It was with great sadness and regret that we learned of the passing after a brief illness of Maureen Fives, 12 The Hermitage, Abbyside, and formerly of The Burgery, Abbyside, Dungarvan, which sad event took place at Waterford Regional Hospital. Maureen who was in her 92nd year and was a native of Camphire, near Cappoquin, was predeceased by her husband Michael (Mick) and by her son Greg (October 2008).
For the vast majority of Maureen's tender years the family resided at the Pike on the Waterford Road. She was educated at Garranbane N.S. and at Convent of Mercy, Longford, where her aunt was a member of teaching staff. On completion of her formal studies, she set out on a nursing career at the North Infirmary, Cork.
Some years later bhi si mar Bean an Ti I gColaiste na Rinne, an chead banaltra a bhronnadh an post sis a Cholaiste rinne Si sar obair, bhi ardrnheas ag foireann agus daltai an Cholaiste uirthi.
She worked in England for some years and was a much valued and respected nurse in Brighton area towards the end of the war. She married Michael Fives in 1946, a union that was blessed with five children. She gave of her very best as a housewife and a shopkeeper at Greene's grocery store and bar at eight and nine Grattan Square. Eventually she returned to her nursing and assisted at St. Joseph's Hospital, Dungarvan.
After the passing of her husband Michael, Maureen attended the Day Care Centre availing of the friendly companionship and appreciating the cuisine on offer. It was in truth her second home where she chatted and recalled yesteryear in the company of old friends. She was deeply interested in GAA affairs, not surprising really as her family was steeped in Gaeldom. She loved the point-to-point scene and, of course, the coursing fixtures. One can recall the immense contribution of the Fives family to the Denise Cup meeting at Colnea back in the '50s and '60s. She held a nomination and on three to four occasions, Maureen tasted victory. Sadly, her passing severs another link with out own childhood and the hours we spent in Colnea in early January. Some years later coursing continued on the lands of the Fives family when again the long-tails took central stage.
She loved her family and her grandchildren and each one's journey in life was always watched and encouraged by Maureen. She was a real lady who had many outstanding virtues and qualities which made her a great favourite with all who had the pleasure of her acquaintance.
Slan go foill Maureen, buailfimid aris le cheile san Riocht Chlormhar. Ar dheis larnh De go raibh si.
Maureen will be greatly missed and mourned by her sons Fr. Colin, OSA, Mickey and Raymond; daughter Geraldine; son-in-law Liam Fennell; daughters-in-law Margaret and Marie; grandchildren Michael, Catherine, Claire and Michael (Limerick), Patrick, Niamh, Claire and Karen (The Pike), Michael, Declan and Mark (Kilminion); brother Dr. Tom Barry, Walsall, England; sisters Kitty Denn (Waterford), Roisin Dunphy (Waterford) and Una Drennan (Western Bay); brothers-in-law Billy Denn and John Drennan; sisters-in-law Alice Barry and Gene Barry; nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends whom we extend our deepest sympathy at this time.
Month's Mind Mass for Maureen Fives will be celebrated on Thursday, 20th August, at 10.00a.m. in St. Augustine's Church, Abbyside. (Funeral Arrangements by James Kiley & Son, Funeral Directors, Dungarvan).
