The Late John O'Meara
It is with regret we record the sudden death of John O'Meara, Newrath on Sunday last, May 3. Youngest son John and Anne O'Meara he was born in Ferrybank in 1928 and grew up on th Rockshire Road. He began his working life as a mechanic and later worked as a fitter at ACEC. John was a very active man and excelled in many of the endurance sports. He was a member of the famous Waterford Boat Club crew who won the Leander Cup.
In 1953 he was a scratch cyclist in the first Rás ever held and in his later years he won a handball All Ireland doubles medal. A keen swimmer he was a member of the Guillemene Swimming Club. In his spare time John was an enthusiastic beekeeper and kept many hives.
John is survived by his wife Ann (nee Wyse) and his son Donal, Dublin and daughter Deirdre, Tramore and their families.
He is also survived by his brother Jim, Rockenham, sister Mamie, Ferrybank and predeceased by his late sisters Peggie Power and Phyllis Fuller.
His removal took place from Power's Funeral Home, Ferrybank, to the Sacred Heart Church, Ferrybank, Following Requiem Mass, celebrated by Fr. James Crotty, PP, his burial took place in the adjoining St. Killian's cemetery.
