Newly-appointed Waterford football manager Benji Whelan is open to the idea of a second tier football championship.

The Deise went seven years without a championship win until this summer when they shocked Wexford and Whelan admits that their chances of winning on a more regular basis would be boosted by playing in a 'B' championship.

“We don’t win many games,” the former Nire boss told the Irish Examiner.

“Being in a second tier competition doesn’t mean you are going to automatically start winning. Certainly, the opportunity to win increases. And that would be a huge benefit to the lads from the point of view of getting a little bit more confidence in the way they play.

“The other side of it is that you are not going to get the opportunity, should you be playing particularly well, of taking on the bigger guys.

"I am not averse to a B championship. Not at all. It is something I will have to study in a bit more detail when it is finalised."
