Assembling a squad that will bring Waterford football forward is new manager Benji Whelan’s main priority.

Whelan knows that he needs to bring in new players to freshen up the squad and he revealed to the Waterford News & Star that would be his main objective over the coming weeks.

“I’ll be looking to broaden the horizons from the point of view of the playing staff and probably invite a few newer guys in with the hope that they will have the appetite for it,” said Whelan.

“It is going to be a tough pre-season, there’s absolutely no doubt about that. We’re going to put in a lot of hard yards. It’s going to require an awful lot of application from the guys.

“If we can focus in on early January and get ourselves right with the help of Gerry Fitzpatrick and Joe Hagan, I think we can really do stuff. I’m very enthusiastic about it.”
