McGlinchey calls for higher standard refs

Waterford manager Tom McGlinchey has asked why none of the top referees in the game are appointed to officiate at Division Three and Four league games.

McGlinchey feels that the standard of referees appointed to lower league games is not as good as the refs that oversee games in the top two divisions.

In Waterford's three games to date, the free count has topped the 40 mark and McGlinchey suggested to the Waterford News & Star that the referees should be rotated through all the divisions.

"In division 4 and division 3, I don't know if there is more pressure on the referees with the assessors in the stand," asked McGlinchey. "I was watching some of the games from division 1 and division 2 on TG4 and you see the tackles put in and the play is let flow.

"Here, it's stopped or pulled back or there's a black card or a yellow card. It's something that the authorities have to look at. Definitely, the referee wasn't at fault last Sunday. We have to look at the way we give away soft frees in front goal.

"I was over Tipperary a long time ago and I remember being in Croke Park back in 2001 and I brought up that point. That's seventeen years ago. It hasn't change and it won't change. When it doesn't affect the big boys, the small teams don't get a look in. We just have to grin and bear it."
