Ronan McCarthy's first game in charge of the Cork footballers yielded a 2-18 to 0-7 victory over Waterford in Ballinacourty and a place in the McGrath Cup final against Clare.

The Rebels laid the foundations for a facile win when they raced into a 0-7 to 0-0 lead inside the first nine minutes. Stephen Sherlock and John O'Rourke were among the point-scorers before Sean Powter raced through for a goal to help the visitors to an unassailable 1-13 to 0-1 half-time lead.

Waterford's only score of the first half came from midfielder Michael Curry, while Gavin Crotty had a goal disallowed.

Crotty and Jason Curry narrowed the gap on the restart before normal service resumed with Cork points from O'Rourke and Sherlock. Sub Padraig Clancy applied the coup de grace with a second goal after Powter had teed him up.
