Being an American hurler and footballer I have a hard time reading this article. I understand that a journalist may have taken some of his words and focused much of the attention on that sore topic, but that is irrelevant. Looking back at the Boston Finals this year, most people would realize that the vast majority of the damages (hotel rooms, hotel lobby, fire alarms, and public intoxication) was done by Americans. This is not to say that the Irish summer immigrants didnt have a great time for themselves. However, I find it to be a hard pill to swallow when an American hurling "ambassador" says that Americans can't think for themselves and act like jackasses because Irish people do. Personally, I am insulted that he is under the impression that anyone else who acts inappropriately has an influence on all American people involved with Gaelic games. A great point was made earlier in that the success of the GAA in America is directly correlated with the willingness and ability of Irish people teaching, coaching, and mentoring the game stateside. Anyone involved in any American GAA club knows that hurling and gaelic football are two of the greatest games God has ever put together. I would be conscience of biting the hand that feeds us.

Just to clear up a thing or two:

Milwaukee Hurling Club (MHC) does play Irish-born players, but only those that are resident in the city and contribute to the club on a year-in, year-out basis. Every club in America, and I mean every club, receives requests from Irish players every year to come out and play with that club. Some clubs avail of those players, some do not. Bear in mind, that a lot of these players are chancing their arm, and trying to get the best "arrangement" they can for themselves. Milwaukee does not even entertain the idea of making such "arrangements". As far as I know if a young fella's dream was to go to Milwaukee for the summer, chances are he might get a game there. If he's looking to have his flight paid, work found, accomadation taken care of, then it ain't going to happen...

I suppose the other thing to add is that the MHC and clubs like Denver and St. Louis are more about participation in their own local leagues than winning at the NACB championships. In fact, they view winning at that level as a natural follow-on from having a strong local league. When they travel to the NACB, they want to reward the most consistent best players in their league. Somebody that flew in for the summer doesn't really fit that profile. MHC seems to be doing fine with this model, having won the Junior B for the second year running, and playing in Junior A this year.

Forgive me for weighing in, but I think that we all, both Irish and American born, can agree that fostering the youth - as they are doing in Milwaukee and elsewhere - is the way forward. We cannot be at the mercy of economic conditions and/or immigration policy as regards the survival of the games. Fair play to the clubs that focus on developing the games domestically. I would also take the comments as quoted with a grain of salt, but to be honest some of the clubs with mostly A/B players also behave badly at the NACB finals - this is not an issue that concerns away based players exclusively. I also agree that there is a place for the "import" to help the games thrive here, maybe someday there will be no need, but certainly not yet. Clubs can make their own policy regarding who they want to play for them, but the bottom line is that those that are tapped into the juvenile development have a better chance of long term success.

10 from barnabas, 10 from rays and maybe 2 from celtics and rangers. seems a good team.

Having players over for the summer isn't the bad thing, but relying exclusively on summer imports (whether hurling or football) like some clubs do does absolutely nothing for development (especially if a resident gets moved to the bench to make room).

Also, Milwaukee has done wonderful things and is a thriving club, but there are others around who have concentrated on hurling, have their own leagues, and rely mostly on Americans like the clubs Denver, Indianapolis and St. Louis.

NY College team
Mr. Rooney, team is training Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sunday mornings. the numbers are quite good with Eugen Kyne training the team again, like last year. The interest is high from the players and they will have a successful trip. The tournament is on Feb 6, 7, and 8th this year. Same weekend as the Minor Board dance.

Johnnyosullivan: I've read it again and I agree with you. I'm guessing that 90% of the interview wasnt reported and its just the journo taking the only controversial comment and writing the article about it. 'Coach trains hurling team' is not an exciting or interesting headline. adding 'spice' is what sells papers.

What do people think about his actual point: that playing Irish players is counter productive to US GAA's development?

You cant argue that his club has been nothing short of a sensation in the US - compared to the rest of US hurling.

What a bunch of Bull****. Cleveland St. Jarlaths and every team in the Mid-West Division has played with 90% american born players ( with success/ 2 national Championships for St. Jarlaths ) with Irish players sprinkled in. They bring a knowledge and understanding of the game that is needed. If the players act in a way that is unacceptable we handle it. This is for American or Irish born. There are many American born players I meet every year that I would not P*** ON along with Irish born. Run your team the way you want with the disciplin needed but to cut off the Irish is not the way. As a American born player I would not have been the Footballer I became ( which is not that good anyway ) without playing and trainning with Irish players. As far as the drinking goes, there here on Holiday shut up and get out of the bar if you don’t like it. I can only hope you don’t show up in Boston as my every day life if filled with uptight A******* LIKE YOU. I’m going to win a game and have fun.

Philadelphia 2009
Whats likely to be the competition in Philly this year??? Will the Shamrocks enter a football team will Tyrone come back? or will it be the Barrys and The Young Irelanders playing week in week out? Or are there any new teams forming?

Im not saying that he doesn't have a point i've seen at first hand guys taking advantage of the club but i would rather he didn't lump all the Irish guys in the one group, their all not like that! I agree that the game in The States would not survive unless there is investment in the youth but if had any sense he would use the irish guys as role models for the youth to promote the the game, see it played well, quick, something that the youth would sit back and say, yea, i'd love to play that game! I know that Indy are doing v.v.well and keep up the good work.

I can safely say that author has taken a mish-mash of quotes and cobbled together an inference that is the headline to this article. I know Dave Olson to be a gentleman and a leader, and there is no way that he said anything like the inflammatory headline of this article. In fact, there is no direct quote of the headline in the article, just a bunch of isolated quotes that don't add up to the headline. The only person who said the words in this headline were the author of this article.

He is one hundred % right and the same can be said about football imports too but the people on this side who bring them over are to blame. They treat them like gods quickly forgetting about the players who are already here. Giving them easy jobs, free rent and no punishment for missed days over drinking. People like Olsen are on the right track, developing the youth and not giving up on them. If the money spent on imports was spent on the youth here then football and hurling will never die and will only get better when players do emigrate from ireland. I am sick and tierd of senior boards all over the states saying that our sport is dieing because no one is coming out. Anyone who travels to the annual CYC would tell you different. Underage football in this country has never being stronger and the interest among parents was never higher.
Croke park should be giving better assistance to all youth boards and working more direct with them. It's time for them to set up a serious overseas development committee strickly for underage football only, as senior boards and there rediclous ideas are the only ones getting catered for.

What an a******, of course there's going to be a few bad apples but what about the good guys that come and add something to the clubs by coaching etc! There not all lager louts and this is a vital part of our Association so i think it's a disgrace that he has went public on something like this. I know where he's coming from guys looking a free ride and taking advantage but he has just classed all the Irish guys that come over in the one boat. Not the promotion of our games, culture and language that the Offical Guide states and he probably hasn't read that either.
