Tara history 7s tournament

April 25, 2016

Back in April 1996 Tara held a Camogie Tournament to celebrate its 10th anniversary. Camogie President Belle O'Loughlin was in attendance to see Noelle Kennedy, Captain of the Toomevara Tipperary team pick up the Senior Cup, whilst Birr won the Plate competition.

Ten years on in '06 and we held a tournament to celebrate the next decade. This time the Tara Presidents, founder sisters Carmel & Majella O'Neill travelled across the sea having returned home some eight years earlier. That day was an astounding success with 31 games of camogie played in the one day event. The tournament has since become an annual event

The next Camogie 7s are set for Saturday 30th April, at Tir Chonaill Park. With 2016 being our 30th Anniversary our lady Presidents will travel to London along with a number of past players and be joined by local President Tommy McConnon to celebrate this milestone.

We have 3 Irish clubs joining us for the tournament.

Broadford of Clare who are sending 2 teams. This is President's Carmel's new team having moved to Broadford in 98. Her daughter Aoife is travelling also and has a host of honours already at the age of 19, including underage club medals, an All Ireland medal and 2 Munster titles with Tulla secondary school and she captained Tulla school to Clare A victory. Alongside camogie Aoife also has All Ireland badminton Medals. Carmel has obviously rubbed off on her.

Team Manager Padraig Hickey has himself hurled at all grades for Broadford, winning Under 21 and Intermediate championships. He has also hurled at every grade for Clare at corner forward, winning Munster and All Ireland intermediate titles.

Broadford Camogie Club History

Broadford Camogie Club was founded in 1997.  Anne Marsh got an U12 team together to enter competition. This team with a very good committee were the foundations of where the club is today. Broadford Camogie Club went on to win a number of honours at underage , Junior and intermediate level, following  this u12 team winning the "C" Competition on their  first year out.  It was in year 2005 the Club earned their senior Club status, winning the intermediate final.  In more recent years due to lack of numbers the Club had no adult team of their own but we amalgamated with Feakle to field at Intermediate level winning Intermediate leagues and North Munster  Leagues  during the years together.  In 2015 the Club regained their own adult Junior team and reached the County final first year back. 2016 sees the Club gaining assistance from Parteen at u16/18 level. We look forward to working together for the betterment of the clubs. Broadford Club is well represented at county level with girls involved in all underage panels.

Bunclody

Bunclody Camogie Club was founded in 1982, so we are only 4 years older than Tara.

The club started with just 2 teams entered for competition - a Junior and U14 team. Thanks to the dedication of one man - Willie Corcoran, who trained, managed and chauffeured the increasing number of teams for the next eight years, the Club thrived.

There have been many highlights over the years but possibly our greatest success was winning the All-Ireland Feile title in 1993.

In fact 1993 would have to have been one of our most successful years as we won U12 & U14 Championship, The U14 All-Ireland Feile, U16 & U18 Championships and the Junior League & Championship Double!!

Our most recent adult success was winning the Intermediate Championship in 2004, 2007 & 2011.

We are delighted to be here to celebrate with Tara on their 30th anniversary and to be a part of this fantastic event especially as our ex Club-mate Emer Kelly is now involved with Tara. We thank the hosts for organising the tournament and we look forward to meeting old friends and making new ones!

Go raibh mile maith agaibh!
