Claddaghs win the inaugural Glo-Herts Championship

With no team in going undefeated this season, the championship cup was up for grabs by any of the five clubs in Glo-Herts.

In their first season affiliating to any county, Western Gaels of Bristol have a major achievement under the belt with reaching a championship final. They got there with a defeat over St.Colmcilles of Cardiff and with a walkover from St.Colmcilles of St.Albans unable to field that particular date with a lot of players home in Ireland over the summer holiday.

Western Gaels met Claddagh Gaels of Luton in the final, after they defeated Eire Og of Oxford and St.Colmcilles of St. Albans within 5 days of each other. Claddagh Gaels have a few extra years of experience under the belt and a strong squad of numbers, so it was sure to be a tough challenge for the green and white Gaels from Bristol.

The match was allowed to flow with referee James Thompson from St Albans. The game was tough but fair and the score didn't reflect the battle that was on show.

With Western Gaels travelling with 12 players, Claddagh Gaels matched but used all of their 8 subs to make sure every girl had a chance to claim victory.

The girls from Bristol defended the Luton team extremely well in the first 15 minutes with great blocks from Lisa Dervan and Lisa Marie O'Mahoney and expert saves from keeper Tara Ward. Claddaghs however soon found their way around the back line with an onslaught of scores from Sophie McCafferty and Marnie O'Neill.

The ball started to make its way up to the Western Gaels side with a great goals from Dani Smith and Clodagh Murphy and a perfect point from Kate O'Gorman. However this was to be all the Claddaghs would let slip through as full back Debbie Power and half back Catriona O'Sullivan were first to the ball in their territory.

Aine Brislane had a remarkable game for the Western Gaels and made sure the Bristol side had their fair share of possession, but it wasn't enough on the day to overpower the Claddagh Gaels who lifted the first Glo-Herts championship cup, named after Glo-Herts Honorary President Bill Barrett's late wife Kathleen.

Final Score: Claddagh Gaels 8-25, Western Gaels 2-1

Claddagh Gaels Scorers: Sophie McCafferty 3-6, Marnie O'Neill 1-10, Jaqueline McGoldrick 2-01
