MENS HURLING NOTES
Round one of the London Intermediate Hurling Championship commenced this weekend and saw Thomas McCurtain's play Fr. Murphys in Greenford.
The McCurtain's starting team consisted of; D. Enright (VC), M. O'Leary, B. Ryan, C. Curtain, E. Caldwell, K. Dowling, T. McCassy, C. Hogan, C. Doyle, A. Higgans, S. Costello (C), K. Collins-Driscoll, M. Russel, E. McAllister, J. Keegan.
McCurtain's started well, playing with a slight breeze in their backs and favourable slope under heel. Diligence in the back line was supported by communal clever play amongst the forwards. Higgans, Costello, Caldwell, Keegan, Doyle and McAllister all registering scores from play whilst Russel dispatched to the net following Higgans winning a penalty. The conclusion of first half proceedings looked favourable in regard to McCurtains - 1.8 to 4 point lead.
The second half followed in the same vein as the first. The two man full forward line and sweeper combination worked! An example of management mastery. The backs again dominated play and built a reinforced foundation for the play to build. At times emotion was difficult to contain with Ryan and Higgans, showing that they are not feeble competitors, however silky touches and intelligence from Hogan, Doyle, Russel and McCassy in addition to the introduction of the semi-mobile Sean Murphy resulted in McCurtain's storming to a 2.13 to 1.9 victory. Leadership was shown by everyone what graced the Greenford turf, however talismanic figures displaying herculean qualities were pronounced. The Vice Captain Enright commanding the troops in the back line while the Captain Costello dictated proceedings in the forward line.
First hurdle passed but many more to jump.
The Hurlers will play Round Two of the Intermediate Championship in Ruislip on Sunday 9th August 2015 at 1.30pm against Fulham Irish.
