Fr Murphy's Ladies Notes

September 23, 2014

The Fr Murphy's camogie squad.

Fr Murphy's Ladies Football & Camogie Club, together with the Fr Murphy's underage hurlers, were delighted to be invited us by Join Us and the Run Richmond Festival, to show the skills of camogie and ladies football to the very large crowd gathered in Old Deer Park.

James and Noreen from the underage club set up several hurling/camogie drills in the main exhibition area and the local children were invited to come and try their hand at the game, these youngsters got a great thrill out of donning the purple and gold helmet and seemed keen to get their parents to bring them to further training sessions in Acton. After the Hurling/Camogie was over,it was the turn of Football out on the rugby pitch, Derbhla Gallagher, Sarah Delaney and Shona Cunningham set up some really competitive short sided games, which many youngsters enjoyed and did not want to finish.

Shona and James even found time to have a go at Hockey on the next pitch.

A great day was had by all and both the ladies and underage clubs are most grateful to Join Us and Run Richmond, for the invitation to promote our club

The previous day Disaster struck for Fr Murphy's camogie with a car breaking down and traffic on the M25 which left them having to take the field with 13 players against a full strength Croydon team. However a great game took place and the Fr Murphy's girls showed terrific spirit and never gave up to the end.Croydon took and early lead by 2 points, but Murphy's fought back to level it, with Aoibhinn McKenna and Cathy Carey making great runs from centre field, Elaine Hayes then had a goal chance blocked and back came Croydon to goal at the other end, the score at the break was Croydon 2-04 Fr Murphy's 0-03.The second half started with Croydon realising they were in a battle and hit a great goal after ten minutes, Murphy's then almost took over, Aoibhinn McKenna goaled, Katie O Brien and Cathy Carey were cutting through on several occasions, Croydon kept their noses in front with a few excellent points, then twice Brigid Hehir in the Croydon goal made point blank saves to deny Aoife Linanne, who had been put through by Cathy Carey. Croydon were deserving winners on a score of 3-09 to 1-07 but you have to admire the sheer heart of a very skillful Fr Murphy's 13."
