St Brendans GFC London club notes
May 20, 2013
St. Brendans defeated Round Towers in the Tipperary Cup on Sunday in Mitcham by 1-13 to 0-12.
Report by Barry Gallagher
Round Towers welcomed St. Brendans on a hazy Saturday afternoon in the long grass at Mitcham.
While missing the soon-to-be-wed Shane O'Hare, the Brendans were able to welcome back a former player and current trainer Dannie O'Connor to the forward line. He instantly responded with a point from play after being released by James Minogue. This put Brendans two points up after two minutes as Kevin Mossey opened the day's scoring.
Yet, goalkeeper Anthony Reddy was called upon to make a point blank save as Round Towers countered with two -points of their own.
The Brendans soon led again, Joe Coulter pointing following on from John Daly winning possession from a breaking ball. Then, O'Connor thumped the ball to the net as he clutched a wonderfully floated ball by Kevin Mossey.
Coulter and O'Connor then combined as Mossey split the posts with his second of the day, while Towers responded with a point of their own.
Mossey chipped over the bar from a free following a foul on James Minogue. Round Towers added two points to their own score to peg Brendans back.
Kevin Mossey added a further three points to his tally, with the first following good work in midfield from Thady Gavin, the second coming from a placed ball after Campbell was fouled and third following a foul on the Mayo native Gavin.
Round Towers were not to be undone and added two points to their own tally before the break.
Half-time score: Round Towers 0-8 St. Brendans 1-8.
Brendan's introduced Robert Leonard and Sean McGoldrick at half-time and it was the former who triggered the second half scoring after good work by Minogue.
John Daly had a shot blocked for a '45. which was subsequently heaved over by Mossey.
Round Towers showed their resolve by once again bringing the game to a one score match with two-points of their own after 15 minutes of play.
It was McGoldrick who scored again after winning the ball on his own 21-yard line. Thady Gavin then started the move of match, winning the ball cleanly in midfield and feeding Daly on the '45, who slipped the ball to Mossey and a final hand pass to O'Connor who drilled over the bar.
The Brendans did have some nervous moments as the Towers, just like they had to whole match, looked to respond. Indeed, McGoldrick could have put the game out of doubt but the Towers' keeper was able to smother his shot and with the game drawing to a close, Kevin Mossey completed his impressive haul of 8-points with a free following another foul on Campbell.
Final score: Round Towers 0-12 St. Brendans 1-13.
