2019 Lookback

2019 was a year of frustration for the Joes Senior men as they ultimately fell short in the  main competition of Intermediate Championship after showing some promise in the early rounds.
Early season was quite stop start with games almost coming ad-hoc and was quite difficult to gain traction among however the Joes managed to make it through to the Murphy cup final against St.Brendans in Ruislip and in a game where the lads never really got going lost out to the Brendans men. The Sheils Cup was a competition were the lads were heavily defeated in East London by Tomas McCurtains when they travelled with a much depleted side.

The league campaign was a mixed bag also with the Joes lads claiming some large scalps with wins over Round Towers, St.Brendans, Tir Chonaill Gaels, among others. However, the Joes paid the price for two defeats against Dulwich Harps and Garyowen which left them a point of top spot behind Round Towers.

The Championship started with a lot of promise. First up was Garyowen in Ruislip and the guys were keen  to right the wrongs of their league defeat to the same opposition a few weeks previous and they did just that, running out 5 point winners in the first group game. Next up for the Joes was Eire Og who had showed well in their opening game however this was a game which the Joes lads dominated from start to finish recording a massive victory over the Holloway Rd team. This victory had seen the Joes qualify for the semi final stage with a game to spare where they would take on Harlesden Harps. When this game came around it was a routine victory for the Joes men in Ruislip and ran out very comfortable winners in the end.

On the back of these victories it there was a real sense of optimism going into the semi final game against Tir Chonaill Gaels. However if there was ever a game were “one of those days” was the phrase to be used it was here. A game were our men never really going into their rhythm and as the game grew on and chasing a TCG lead frustrations grew. TCG ran out deserving 4 point winners that day and it was another day of thinking what if for the lads.

On a more optimistic front the Club fielded the reserve team for the first time in many a year and recorded some great victories over Eire Og and Thomas McCurtains. It was great to get everyone involved and created a great buzz around the club, this is something which the club will be continuing into 2020 so definitely a case of watch this space.

The club also ran some successful off the field events with the awards night taking place in Ealing Golf Club back in Febuary and holding Annual Golf classic in West Middlesex Golf Club in July.

Finally the Youth team continued to grow in stature taking part in various tournament over the course of the season and performed remarkably at the ABCs in the middle of the summer. There will be a full write up and summary of the youth season in the next few weeks.
