Winning is all that matters to Cunniffe

Leitrim manager Martin Cunniffe has stressed that playing in Croke Park is secondary to winning the Lory Meagher Cup.

On Saturday afternoon, the Connacht side travel to GAA headquarters where they take on Lancashire in the decider, looking to make amends for their defeat to defeat in the final two years ago.

A lot has been made of the opportunity handed to lower tier counties to play in Croke Park, but for Cunniffe, the focus is on the win and not the venue.

“The main thing about this game is winning it. It is grand going to Croke Park but if you don’t win, it is a very sad place,” Cunniffe told the Leitrim Observer.

“It was a sad place for me the last time because that evening, the phone started ringing and didn’t stop ringing for a few days, telling me I should have done this and I should have done that.”

He added: “It will stand to us, the majority of the lads will have played there except the seven or eight lads who have come on but we’re not playing any of them. They have been there and they are pushing the older lads.

“It is great for the lads, to be getting a second go at Croke Park and it’ll be a lot better for the likes of James Glancy, Clement, the Moretons, lads like that who are in their 30s, if they can finish it off, it’ll be great for them.”
