Dulwich Harps club notes

Club Notes 19th June

Another historic milestone was achieved for the club on Sunday afternoon when Dulwich Harps fielded a men's reserve team in the London reserve league when they took on Thomas McCurtains on Peckham Rye Common.

The lads opened the game brightly and after 15 minutes on the clock only the minimum separated the teams with McCurtains leading on a score line of 0-5 to 0-4. However McCurtains soon asserted their dominance on the game and ran out eventual winners on the day with a score line of 4-15 to 2-11. Nevertheless, this was a promising first outing for our reserve team who fielded a total of 19 players on the day. Well done to all on the day and a special word of mention must go the reserve team management of John Keyes and John O'Sullivan. Well done lads.

A few days prior to the reserve game, our seniors also took on Thomas McCurtains in a second round league game in what was a repeat of last year's enthralling championship final. In a similar fashion to that match back in September 2017, this was also a game of high intensity with little separating the teams for much of the game. The Harps opened the game brightest and raced into an early 0-03 to 0-0 lead with the pick of the points coming from Sean Lavery and a long range free from goalkeeper Niall Russell.

The defence of the Harps remained resolute in the opening 15 minutes of the game and it wasn't until after this period that McCurtains registered their first score of the game. They then reeled of 4 more unanswered points to leave them leading going in at the break on a score line of 0-5 to 0-3.

Playing into a strong breeze in the second half, the Harps opened the half in a similar vein to the first and registered the opening score with a well worked, long range point coming from Mick Malone. Both teams traded scores in what was becoming a war of attrition with little to separate the teams, the pick of the points coming from Sean Lavery, Ronan O'Reilly and Mickey Clarke.

Going into the final stages of the game, a well worked team point was tapped over by James McDermott to leave the teams level at 0-9 apiece.

However McCurtains had a sting left in the tail and a last gasp goal from Connor Murphy edged the game for the east London outfit on a final score line of Dulwich Harps 0-09 Thomas McCurtains 1-09.

Next up for the Seniors is a trip up to North West London as they take on Tara's in a Round 3 league fixture at Northolt Rugby Club, Greenford UB6 8BJ on Wednesday 20th of June. Throw in at 7:15pm.

Training continues for the lads and we are always on the lookout for more prospective players. For more information please contact Enda on 07522 723765.

Our Ladies team have a massive game coming up this weekend as they take on Tir Conail Geals in the Junior Championship final. The game is schedule for Saturday 23rd of June in Ruislip with a throw in time of 11:00am. The girls have been performing well this season and we would ask that all club members get out and support them in their quest to bring the Junior championship south of the river.

Our Ladies are also on the lookout for any prospective players and if you are interested in joining please email us at [email protected] or contact Ursula on 07446 977739.

Finally the club would like to congratulate our men's coach Barry McDonagh and his wife Caroline who recently celebrated the birth of their baby daughter.
