Thomas McCurtains GAA Club Notes

May 21, 2018

Well done to all our teams playing over the last week.

There were two mid-week games. Our footballers had a fantastic win over Eire Og on Tuesday evening to reach the Final of the Murphy Cup while our Ladies footballers started their Intermediate Championship campaign against KKG on Wednesday but unfortunately lost.

Our Ladies were out in Championship action again on Saturday morning, this time against Parnells. They played some fantastic football and although Parnells were reduced to 13 women for a period of the match they proved too strong. Later in the day our Mens Footballers lost to Harlesden Harps in the Shiels Cup Quarter Final. On Sunday the U13 footballers travelled to Dulwich in the and played a blitz winning against Dulwich Harps and Tara GFC. While finally the Hurlers had a great win against Fulham Irish in the Quarter Final of the Ronan Cup.

We hosted a successful Race Night in aid of our Players Injury Fund on Saturday Night in the Victoria Pub, Romford. There was a great crowd in attendance and it was an entertaining night. A huge thanks to Richie Browne, The Victoria Pub, ig9, all the sponsors of the races and anyone who donated prizes on the night. A massive thanks to MC for the night Harry Corkerry and to Paul Loughran for providing the musical entertainment after the races.

Our U15 Footballers are playing a league game against Tir Chonaill Gaels in Greenford on Tuesday. There are currently no adult fixtures next weekend.

Finally well done to the London Juniors who beat Gloucestershire in the British Championship on Sunday, Especially Niall Coffey who captained the side, Conor Murphy and John Winters.

Mens Football:

Tuesday evening the Footbalers travelled over to Downhills Park to play Eire Og in the Semi Final of the Murphy Cup. Despite some excellent defending from Danny Walsh at full back, Eire Og had the better of the opening exchanges and opened up a 4 points to 1 lead (Paddy Halligan with McCurtains only score). The Macs started to get in to their groove and points from Darragh McNulty and John Rafferty closed the gap before a well taken Halligan goal on 25 mins saw them take the lead for the first time, a lead they would not relinquish. A point from Niall Coffey saw McCurtains lead 1-04 to 0-05 at half time.

Fine scores from Rafferty, McNulty, Halligan (2) and a goal from Coffey opened up a 7 point lead for McCurtains early in the second half before Eire Og scored a goal with 15 mins left. Just when it looked as if the momentum was swinging back in Eire Ogs direction, up popped John Winters with a fantastic score from 45 meters to halt them in their tracks. With Eire Og chasing another goal at this stage the McCurtains forwards kept the scoreboard ticking over out scoring their opponents 5 points to 2 in the closing stages. McCurtains will now meet St Brendans in the Final.
