Thomas McCurtains GAA Club Notes

April 23, 2018

Hurling training will return to Goodmayes from next week. Training continues as usual for all other teams.

Our Ladies and Mens Footballers both lost out in entertaining games in Goodmayes. The ladies were on the wrong side of the scoreline against Tir Chonaill Gaels on Saturday and the Men lost to St Brendan's on Sunday.

Next weekend the Camogs will travel to Birmingham to play a league blitz and our Hurlers start their league campaign against Kilburn Gaels in Scrubs on Saturday. While our footballers play St Joes in their final group game in the Murphy Cup in Goodmayes on Sunday.

Ladies Football:

The ladies played Tir Chonaill Gaels in the second round of the league on a superb Saturday afternoon but came out on the wrong side of the scoreline. McCurtains started the better but two goals from TCG saw them go into the break leading by three. Two early second half goals from Bríd Murphy and Aoife Kelly saw McCurtains regain the lead but with the aid of the breeze TCG started to build up the points. There was nothing to separate the teams heading into the final quarter but TCG took a hold of the game and outscored McCurtains 1-6 to 2 points to finish the game the stronger.

Mens Football:

A strong second half showing by St. Brendan's proved the difference in this game played on a sunny afternoon in Goodmayes. The visitors scored 1-6 without reply in a crucial fifteen minute period in the second half to take control of the game as Thomas McCurtains couldn't find a way back. McCurtains, playing with the wind in the first half, started the game the brighter of the two teams. Two early goals from Conor Murphy and Mark McGirr gave them the perfect start and they could have been out of sight after five minutes if they had taken their chances. St Brendan's forwards eventually found their range and two points from Brendan Scannell got them back into the game. Johnny McGuigan and McGirr restored McCurtains 6 point lead before Danny McGovern pulled one back for Brendan's to end a whirlwind first 15 minutes. The game settled down as the hot weather took its toll with both teams registering two points apiece for the remainder of the half, Murphy and McGirr trading points with Niall Campbell (free) and Scanell again, leaving the Macs protecting a 5 point lead at the break.

McCurtains started the second in similar fashion to the first with a fantastic turnover in the middle of the park leading to Murphy scoring his second point of the day after a minute. St Brendan's then stepped it up a gear and rattled off 1-6 over the next 15 minutes. The goal came when Podge Crawley pounced on a loose ball in the square and fisted it to the back of the net. A brace each from Campbell including his second free of the day and Blanie Rigney with points from McGovern and Padraig Leahy put the Brendan's in command and they never looked back. McCurtains looked to pile the pressure on but a Stephen Johnston free and points from Peter Rafferty and McNulty were equally matched by points from Campbell (2), John Daly and Aidan Fulcher as some tight defence from St Brendan's made sure of the result.
