Fr Murphys Camogie & Ladies Football Club notes

March 20, 2018

" Fr Murphy's have just completed, a very hectic but successful and enjoyable weekend

On Friday under Floodlights at Wasps FC, as part of The Mayor of London's St Patrick's Festival, the club took on St Mary's University for The Michael J Butler Shield, in what turned out to be a terrific game of Football, Fr Murphy's going behind 1.02 to no score after five minutes, but then hit a purple patch, scoring three goals and rock their college opponents to lead 3.04 to 1.03 at half time.

The college girls came out all guns blazing in the second half to narrow the gap by scoring 3 unanswered points, but the Fr Murphy's defence was in top form and denied any goal chances with keeper Connie Lynch in superb form

the girls in purple and gold then upped a gear, while the St Mary's keeper made a spectacular save from Niamh McGrath

The Fr Murphy's ran out winners on a score line of 3.10 to 1.08

The game was impartially refereed , by Donie Duggan (Michael J Butler's brother in law)

The game was preceded by a very entertaining  Camogie exhibition, with great skills on show on a very wet surface

Afterwards in the clubhouse all participants were presented with their medals and The Michael J Butler Cup and Shield were presented to the winning captains

Then everyone tucked into a Clonakilty Buffet, with produce donated by Clonakilty Black Pudding which was prepared and served by Breda Weller and Jean Duggan (sisters of Michael J Butler) and all the family.

After some celebrations and then watching Ireland's grand slam, it was back out on a freezing snow clad Sunday morning, 37 girls carried the provincial and county flags at the head of The Mayor of London's St Patrick's Parade, decked out in their stunning jersies, supplied by Bodibro (Ben Brosnan) of Wexford.

The club would like to thank their sponsors for this day  Clonakilty, Engage Education,DRS Bond Management and The Cork Foundation

It was a wonderful weekend and we now get back down to training for the season ahead in both Football and Camogie, with training on Wednesday nights at 7.30 pm at Wasps FC,Twyford Avenue, London W3 9QA, near Ealing Common Station
