Thomas McCurtains GAA Club Notes

November 07, 2017

Unfortunately our footballers lost out in the Semi-Final of the All-Britain Club Championship to Sean McDermotts from Warwickshire on Sunday. Two goals in the first half (one surrounded by a bit of controversy) proved decisive as McDermotts weathered a McCurtains storm in the closing stages and ran out winners by two points. On a cold but sunny afternoon McCurtains took an early lead scoring the first two points of the game courtesy of Niall Coffey. McDermotts responded well and took a slender lead with 10 mins to go to the break before scoring their goals in the space of a couple of minutes. McCurtains refused to back down and both sides swapped scores leaving it 2-06 to 0-06 at half time.

With the aid of the breeze in the second half the lads from East London pressed on the attack and narrowed the gap to two after 15 mins. McDermotts then found their rhythm and knocked over three points in a row to widen the gap again, 2-10 to 0-11 with 10 minutes left. A fantastic move down the left ended up with Mark McGirr hitting a cross field ball which was gathered by Conor Murphy inside the 13m line. Murphys shot was blocked but the rebound was gathered up by Mcgirr and he slotted it low into the bottom right of the net. With McCurtains getting the next score to leave the minimum between the teams it set up a grand stand finish, but it was McDermotts who had the final say as they scored the games last point and McCurtains couldn't find a reply.

A huge thanks to the management and the players who will look to build on what has been a hugely successful year.
