Sean Duffy Memorial Tournament

October 17, 2017

On Thursday 12th October Sigersons hosted the Sean Duffy memorial tournament for the Under 12 girls, in attendance at the tournament was Strabane, Castlederg and Aghyaran.

Sean Duffy was an active committee member and club coach in particular with ladies' football, Sean sadly passed away on the 6th November 2005. He played a major role in the promotion of ladies' football within Strabane, he also was a great fundraiser and was widely respected within the club.

A tournament has been run in his memory ever since and the Duffy family have been great supporters of the club, his memory will never be forgotten in Strabane Sigersons.

It was a very wet and windy night for football but this did not affect the standard on show. The three teams played in a league format with Strabane defeating Castlederg and Aghyaran and Castlederg edging out Aghyaran also to reach the decider with Strabane.

The final was a very tight affair with Strabane edging it four points to three, Niamh Coyle scored two brilliant points for Strabane in the final with Strabane then scoring a late winner, Riley Neeson made a crucial block in the closing stages to deny Castlederg levelling the game.

The presentation was made in Sigersons clubrooms where club Chairman Liam Sweeney thanked everyone who attended, organised and helped out at the tournament and praised the girls on the standard of football on show. He also spoke about how big of loss Sean was to the club both for ladies' football and fundraising and spoke of how the club felt it crucial to ensure Sean's memory was remembered.

Next Liam asked club President John McCrory to present flowers on behalf of the club to Sean's sister Bridgeen Cairns, after this each team were presented will medals and then Strabane captain Riley Neeson was presented with the Sean Duffy shield by Sean's brother Eamon, his daughter Niamh and granddaughter Ruby.

Liam concluded by thanking the Duffy family for their attendance and their continued support to the club over the years before Eamon Duffy thanked all the girls for turning up in great numbers and honouring Sean's memory, he also thanked everyone within Strabane Sigersons for organising the tournament.

Thank you and well done to L O'Kane and Audrey Graham for organising the tournament and thanks to everyone who helped out refereeing and providing tea and refreshments on the night.

Finally, well done to Strabane Sigersons under 12 girls on winning the tournament and commiserations to Castlederg and Aghyaran but the club would like to thank them very much for their attendance.
