Eight key matches took place tonight in the U21 football championship, including action from all four provinces.

Intriguingly, all four defending provincial champions would put their titles on the line: Dublin, Cork, Cavan and Roscommon.

The Rossies hosted Sligo at Kiltoom in the first Connacht semi-final, while there was also semi-final action in Leinster and Munster.

In Leinster, defending All-Ireland champions Dublin met Longford at Navan and Meath faced Kildare in Portlaoise. Down south, Cork - who are bidding for five-in-a-row - entertained Kerry at Pairc Ui Rinn and Tipperary hosted Clare in Thurles.

All four Ulster quarter-finals were due to go down for decision: holders Cavan - also gunning for a fifth title on the spin - travelled to Ballybofey to take on Donegal; Monaghan welcomed Derry to Inniskeen; and Tyrone had home advantage against neighbours Fermanagh. The game between Armagh and Antrim was postponed due to floodlight failure at the Athletic Grounds.
