Strabane Sigersons GAA is extending an invitation to all boys and girls, in classes P4-P7 to come and sample the joys of Gaelic Football in a four week "Give Gaelic a Go" programme.
The free programme will offer the children a four week taster of Gaelic Football. Following successful completion of the 4 week programme, the children will attend the National League game between Tyrone and All Ireland Champions Kerry on ester Sunday. Then to conclude the "Give Gaelic a Go" programme Sigersons will host a three day Gaelic Football Camp during the Easter break that will see several special guests attend, including some of the current Tyrone Squad.
Jason Foley, Sigersons Youth Officer, explained the reasoning behind running the programme. All children in Strabane enjoy Gaelic football within the school environment but not enough make the transition to Club football. Our Club training is a continuation of the fun games the children take part in during their physical activity sessions in school so there is no doubting that if the children were given the opportunity they would enjoy training with the Club just as much, if not more.
At Strabane Sigersons we adopt the "Go-Games" principles of the GAA whereby all players regardless of ability play in our games. The emphasis of our training is centred on full participation and fun. The children flourish within this environment and achieve accelerated development in their athletic ability compared to other competitive sports. Our youth members also see similar improvements in their confidence and interpersonal skills.
The health benefits of being active and participating in sports is well documented and whilst the main aim of this programme is to increase participation levels of Gaelic Football in Strabane there is a secondary theme of helping the youth of Strabane realise the health benefits of an active lifestyle. I'd urge parents to bring their children along. They will let you know if they have enjoyed the experience. All you have to do is give them the opportunity.
The programme starts on Wednesday 11th March from 7-8pm and will take place on the Astroturf pitch at Melvin Sports Complex. For further information contact Youth Officer Jason Foley [email protected] or 07894056977.
