HL3A: Monaghan claim dramatic victory over Tyrone

February 18, 2019

Monaghan 4-12

Tyrone 2-13

A goal and a point in stoppage time saw Monaghan clinch victory and pick up their first league points in this very entertaining contest that was played in breezy conditions in Healy Park yesterday afternoon.

Monaghan fielded their strongest team so far in the competition with the Castleblayney players, Colin Merrick, Mark Treanor, Peter Treanor and Cormac McNally turning out for their first taste f league action and they played a major part in this victory.

At the end of a very entertaining first half Tyrone led by 1-10 to 1-7, Damien Casey with 1-5 of that total, two of those coming in stoppage time after Monaghan had fought back to parity at 1-7 apiece in the 27th minute, Mark Treanor with the Monaghan  gaol in the 15th minute.

The second-half was a real dingdong affair during which the sides were level on five occasions, trading scores repeatedly as Monaghan grew increasingly into the game and took a two points lead entering the final ten minutes of normal time. Tyrone responded with spirit to get the margin down to the minimum but ultimately it was the predatory instincts of Stephen Lambe who rammed in his second goal in stoppage time to clinch victory.
