Tyrone chairman Michael Kerr condemned the social media criticism of incidents that occurred in games in the county this year.

The county’s championship was marred by a number of high profile controversies, the majority of which were captured on video and placed online.

Kerr feels the criticism received was unjust as people were coming to their own conclusions without knowing the facts.

In his speech to Congress, the Ulster Herald reports that Kerr told delegates that these comments are made by people interested in ‘self promoting’.

“The GAA like all other organisations has also an issue with social media. It can be a powerful tool for the promotion of our games but it can also drive potential members away,” said Kerr.

“The number of incidents caught on phone this year was astounding but it was small compared to the number of games we play over the county annually.

“Those that comment on social media about incidents at matches, where they weren’t present, aren’t best placed to do so. They are only interested in promoting themselves. I particularly condemn those who in past lives were involved in administration - they should know better than to comment without all the facts.

“Social media platforms provide very powerful platforms and self policing seems to be the only sensible solution. I therefore ask anyone who’s about to post to think before they condemn another member of our association.”
