Tyrone defender Cathal McCarron is in no doubt that the influx of younger players in the squad has driven on the rest of the panel.

The emergence of the likes of Hugh Pat McGeary and Michael McKernan in defence has been a big boost for the Red Hand County. This gives them more options and McCarron is adamant that is only a good thing.

The long serving defender told the Ulster Herald that they are going into the Ulster SFC in a confident mood despite facing a tough clash against Monaghan in the opener.

"It's great to see the competition for places. For a number of years we wouldn't have had much competition in the defence," said McCarron.

"It's great that there are lads there to keep you on your toes. It's only good for them as well and long may it continue."
