A joint venture involving Fermanagh GAA, Ulster Rugby, the IFA and Athletics Ireland could see a new centre of excellence being developed in the county.

The multi-purpose facility would be located at the Necarne Estate, but Fermanagh GAA vice-chairman Phil Flanagan told delegates at the county convention that the bodies concerned were making little headway with the Council Chamber.

The facility would be used by all organisations and the Fermanagh Herald reports that Flanagan told delegates that all the relevant parties were keen to push ahead with the project.

“We’re currently in discussion with Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, where we’re making very little headway, with regards to a piece of land they have called the Necarne Estate which comprises a 200-acre site outside Irvinestown,” stated Flanagan.

“The council are currently in discussion with a private organisation to lease the 200 acres in their entirety over to them to develop as a leisure and hospitality facility.

“It is our intention to continue to encourage Fermanagh and Omagh District Council to transfer a portion of this land to Fermanagh GAA for us to develop a regional centre of excellence and provide additional sand based pitches for training purposes.

“We’re going on conjunction with Ulster Rugby and the Irish Football Association. We are hopeful of being able to secure substantial Peace funding to cover the substantial cost which would be required to develop such a facility.”
