Alan Brogan believes his former Dublin team-mate Stephen Cluxton should have received the Footballer of the Year award.

Mayo's Andy Moran was chosen for the prestigious award instead, while Dublin supporters were further outraged when the three-in-a-row All-Ireland winning skipper lost out to David Clarke for the goalkeeping position on the All Star team.

Picking his Team of the Year in the Irish Independent, Brogan wrote about Cluxton: "Five All-Irelands and five All Stars later, Cluxton is still producing the goods. Humble, hard-working, innovative and brave. His calm presence and super kicking game are so important to this Dublin team, not just for this year but for doing what he has done better than any other 'keeper in the history of the GAA. Never has a player been more deserving of the Footballer of the Year award."

Brogan's selection includes six other Dubs - Mick Fitzsimons, Cian O'Sullivan, James McCarthy, Paul Mannion, Con O'Callaghan and Dean Rock.

He also includes Mayo's Chris Barrett, Keith Higgins, Colm Boyle, Aidan O'Shea and Andy Moran as well as Tyrone's Colm Cavanagh, Enda Smith of Roscommon and Kerry's Paul Geaney in his best XV.
