Westmeath players and management celebrate after the Allianz HL Division 2A final victory over Kerry at Cusack Park, Ennis.

New Westmeath senior hurling manager Shane O’Brien was delighted to see his charges get their competitive campaign off to a winning start.

Westmeath defeated Carlow in the Walsh Cup clash at Kinnegad last Sunday afternoon in a game that was played in horrendous conditions.

O’Brien, who has taken over from Joe Quaid, told the Westmeath Examiner that he was pleased how the newcomers in the side had done.

“It was great to get a run out even though the conditions were awful. It was far more beneficial than any training sessions,” said O’Brien.

“It’s not ideal to be playing at this time of the year, but it’s better to get games. We’d be happier if it was a bit warmer.

“We only had four lads starting who started the Joe McDonagh Cup final last July, so it was great for us to get a look at the other lads. We wanted to give everyone a run. We are very pleased overall. The lads gave a good account of themselves, but we won’t be getting carried away after one game.”
