GAA could soon be played at Anfield

Anfield, the home of Liverpool FC.

Liverpool FC are to seek permission to host GAA matches as part of its plans to expand Anfield.

The Champions League winners, who have a huge Irish fan-base, have announced plans for a £60 million expansion of the Anfield Road stand that will raise the famous stadium's capacity above 61,000. The club is expected to submit a planning application in the spring and will also apply for a permanent licence to host concerts and sporting events such as GAA and American football. Currently, it has a two-year licence for such events.

Liverpool’s chief operating officer Andy Hughes said: “I think it is clear we didn’t perhaps perform a consultation for the concerts as well as we could have done and we are always looking to improve. I think we did a really good job on the Main Stand and the objective here is to run the best consultation process that we can.

“Our ambition is to increase the capacity of Anfield stadium and allow more fans to enjoy some of the best football in the world. We have always been looking at a long-term development plan for Anfield and we have been looking specifically at Anfield Road as the next step post-Main stand."

Exhibition GAA matches were regularly played at the old Wembley Stadium in London in the 1960s and 70s, but it's likely that any GAA games played at Anfield would be restricted to 11-a-side or less given that GAA pitches are nearly twice the size of a conventional soccer field
