Not too many can lay claim to nineteen-year-old Sligo captain James Weir’s achievement of leading his county to All-Ireland senior hurling glory.

For that is exactly what the St Farnan’s clubman did at Croke Park last Saturday when helping his side to glory in the Nicky Rackard Cup final.

A one-point win over Armagh saw Weir walk up the steps of the Hogan Stand to pick up the Cup and he admitted that it was an honour to captain the side, particularly at such a young age.

“To come up here and go back to back on last year, is just unbelievable like. With all the work and everything we’ve put in throughout the year, it’s finally paid off. We’ll look forward to next year now, but we’ll enjoy this,” Weir explained to the Sligo Champion.

He added: It’s an honour to captain the boys. They’re a serious bunch of fellas. They’ve put in serious work all year and thankfully everyone got the rewards. It was well deserved.”

We stand corrected, but it looks as if Weir is the youngest ever All-Ireland senior winning captain in hurling and football.
