Ballygunner manager Fergal Hartley has decided to step down from the position.

Hartley led his native club to county titles in 2014, 2017 and ’18, while adding a second Munster club SHC title to their roll of honour, seventeen years after winning their first.

Ballygunner were defeated in the All-Ireland club SHC semi-final by Kilkenny and Leinster champions Ballyhale Shamrocks last Saturday week.

The former Waterford hurler has had time to mull over his future since then and decided to step away from the role.

The Waterford News & Star reports that Hartley cited the time commitments needed for the position and the fact that after three years a new voice is needed in the dressingroom as the reasons for his departure.

It won’t be long before the Ballygunner players are back in action as the Waterford SHC starts at the end of March.
