Michael Ryan stepped down after four years as Westmeath hurling manager following Saturday evening's All-Ireland SHC preliminary round quarter-final defeat to Wexford.

Afterwards, the players presented the affable Waterford man with a momento in recognition of his contribution to Westmeath and thanking him for all he has done for them since 2014.

A plaque on the base on the beautiful miniature hurl read: "Thank you for all you have brought to our county. Your hard work, commitment and desire has shaped our character as men and instilled great belief within us. Four special years that will long be remembered."

Speculation has already begun over who will succeed Ryan with many in the Lake County expressing a desire to see former U21 manager Adrian Moran - who guided Westmeath to a famous Leinster championship victory over Kilkenny two years ago - promoted to the senior role.
